Static or WordPress?
Both have their place. An honest comparison, no sales pitch, just clear advice for each situation.
Fast, secure, calm
Pre-generated HTML. No database, no plugins that can break, no weekly updates.
- Business sites, portfolios, landing pages
- Sites that don't change daily
- Owners who don't want technical maintenance
- Maximum speed and high scores in search engines
- Cheap hosting (often < €5/mo or free)
Flexible and familiar
Mature ecosystem with thousands of plugins. Strong if you publish often or run a webshop, but with maintenance.
- Webshops (WooCommerce)
- Blogs and news sites with daily posts
- Sites with multiple editors
- Specific functionality via existing plugins
- Owners who do (or hire) maintenance themselves
When do you choose what?
Four questions that usually point the way. Not absolute rules, but a good starting point.
How often do you update content?
Daily/weekly? WordPress. A few times a year? Static.
Do you need a webshop?
Many products + stock? WordPress or Shopify. A few items? Static with a Stripe link works fine.
Do you want to do maintenance yourself?
No time or interest? Static, there is no maintenance. Yes? WordPress works, if you keep it up.
Speed & online visibility?
Critical? Static almost always wins. Not decisive? WordPress is fine, if built well.
What WordPress maintenance actually involves
No fearmongering, just know what you're getting into. A WordPress site is a living system. Skip this and you get vulnerabilities or unexpected breakage.
Core updates
WordPress itself releases updates every few months. Ignoring = security risk.
Plugin & theme updates
Weekly to monthly. Sometimes a conflict breaks something, then test.
Backups
Database + files, regular and offsite. Essential when something goes wrong.
PHP & hosting
PHP versions expire. Every few years hosting must be upgraded, and your code with it.
Why a SPA is not a good idea for your website
A SPA (Single Page Application) is built in React, Vue or Angular and loads everything via JavaScript. AI generators like Lovable, Bolt.new and Replit Agent produce a SPA by default. Fine for web apps and dashboards, but for a business website or portfolio it falls short on three crucial points.
Invisible to Google
A SPA sends an empty HTML page to the browser. Content is loaded afterwards via JavaScript. Google can index it, but it's slower, less reliable, and you lose points compared to sites that deliver content directly.
Slow initial load
The browser must first download, parse and execute a large JavaScript bundle before building the page. That takes time, and every second of delay costs visitors and Google ranking.
Breaks without JavaScript
If JavaScript is blocked or slow, the visitor sees nothing. A static site delivers working HTML immediately, regardless of browser or connection.
